The Design Center at Western creates posters for every upcoming season for the Gilmore Theatre in Kalamazoo. I chose to take on and adaption of George Orwells 1984. Emily Duguay, the Director of Theatre Arts Management at Western, worked with us as a class to make sure the posters for each play reflected the feeling the directors wanted to portray.

I liked how I was able to take different approaches for the poster. Though if I were to choose, I would’ve emulated more of the original stories motifs.

Emily and the director of 1984 wanted the political turmoil of today to be reflected in this poster. I would’ve preferred something not so on the nose, but I understand where they were coming from.

Option 1 was the poster that was chosen, though I was partial to option 2. Option 2 leaves more to the imagination and eludes more to the original stories motifs.
