The Process
There were limitations, however. I had to research a prominent graphic designer and emulate their style. I researched California artist Michael Schwab.
Based out of California, Schwab is known for his simple yet striking compositions. He's known for his designs for the Toyota FJ Cruiser, National Humane Society and Amtrak Posters, just to name a few.
Schwab uses a unique typeface that he created called Schwab Poster. It's not available for commercial use, but you can see it featured on the majority of his works.
Knowing I couldn't use this typeface, I had to create my own version, the Weaver Poster per se. I used Futura Bold as my base. Each letter was printed out, hand traced, then scanned back in to create a digital character.
For my imagery, I emulated Schwab's simplicity and cut-paper quality of compositions. I broke down images to their simplest features, while still keeping the details that made the object identifiable.
